Highpointing in the US involves climbing treacherous mountains thousands of feet high and sometimes dozens of miles from the nearest road. Some highpoints gain you more cachet than others: Mt. Rainier (WA) gets you a lot more mountain cred than does Signal Hill (AR).
However, of all the vertically unimpressive highpoints, Florida's Britton Hill receives the dunce cap (which would probably be taller than the state's highpoint). Britton Hill lies about 120 miles west of Tallahassee. According to this map, that means it's located somewhere in Alabama, which really doesn't make any sense at all.
Standing at 345 ft. Britton Hill, the nation's lowest state highpoint, would go unnoticed by the thousands of people driving on FL-285, were it not for the numerous signs pointing it out. It's located not far from Lake Jackson, where Andrew Jackson began his march west to beat back the Spanish-supported Seminole Indians in 1818. The Seminoles got back at ol' Hickory though by winning the 1993 and 1999 national college football titles and by regularly taking $20 bills at their casino. Joke's on you Andy.
So on your next trip to Disney World, be sure to stop by Britton Hill. You have nowhere to go from there but up!
